Perceptions of Dentistry
Would you open a business if only 25% of the entire nation spent money at that particular business? Probably not; however, more and more Dental Offices open every single day when it is a fact that only 25% of Americans spend money at the Dentist. This is one reason why over 90% of Dentists over the age of 60 cannot retire or cannot retire comfortably; however, there is a much bigger reason that continues to worsen every day.
What is it?
Facts are the Dental Profession has serious perception problems as Americans view Dentistry as costly, elective, painful and unnecessary. Even worse, these perceptions have been created by the people in the Dental Profession, without them even knowing they are doing it (Dentists, Dental Consultants, Hygienists, Assistants, Treatment Coordinators, Front Desk and more).
These negative perceptions are directly related to why only 25% of the nation spends money at the Dentist and why Financial Conversion remains lower than 23% even in the highest producing practices in the country.
Every single day Dental Consultants (people who used to work in a Dental Practice) teach things to their clients that reinforce these negative perceptions without even knowing they are doing it. Every single day Doctors (Dentists, Orthodontists and more) utilize verbiage that reinforce this perception without even knowing they are doing it. Virtually everyone in the Dental Environment has contributed to the negative perceptions; however, not one of them did it intentionally. Everyone is teaching and doing things with the best of intentions because that is how they were taught and/or what they learned throughout their respective career.
I believe if the Dental Profession chooses to do nothing, these negative perceptions will continue to worsen, causing even less people to spend money at the Dentist. In turn, the only survivors will be the large Dental Corporations (as they are currently growing at a rate of over 25% a year) as the family/private owned practices will no longer be able to survive.
